All Students Can Read Your Mind

Did you ever wonder how a student knows that you have just spent your whole lunch period talking about what a lazy, apathetic, loser they are? Or maybe you could not figure out why the students have such poor performance in your class after you repeatedly tell your colleagues about the “delinquents” you teach and that they just don’t care about learning. I also bet that you have pondered why a student is disrespectful to you after you have just made comments about how “you have given up” on them to your partner.  It is because every student can read your mind.

Students are very intuitive and obviously do not read minds, but they do read body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, and the level of genuine sincerity that is expressed about their well-being. If educators are truly going to raise the instructional bar for students and expect high levels of learning for all, a teacher’s mind must be free of stereotypes and a negative outlook for students. Until educators truly BELIEVE in students, and expect them to learn and challenge themselves, schools will continue to produce lazy, apathetic, loser, delinquents that the adults have given up on.

Maybe if everyone really thought students can read minds, educators might change their own minds and realize they are responsible for fostering a supportive learning environment. Educators might change their own minds about how the negative thoughts and beliefs they hold are reflected in their daily interactions with students.

What do students see when they read your mind?

How to "Trick" Your Friends and Colleagues into Becoming Part of a PLN

With my new exercise regime, I look forward to the days that I do cardio on the recumbent bike, as it makes for 40 minutes of reading my Twitter feed and sharing powerful educational links with my fellow Twitter followers and also my Facebook friends.

Those folks that I follow and that follow me on Twitter are intentional members of my PLN. However, my Facebook friends are typically just that, friends. I have recently opened up my Facebook friend list to my former co-workers. Many of these former co-workers stated that they didn't have time for Twitter or creating a PLN.

With the help of #Hootsuite, I am able to share educational/professional links via many social media formats. So now, those folks that don't follow outstanding educational leaders on Twitter are still getting the same information on Facebook as if they were an intentional member of my PLN. Many even respond to the post or share it out to their friends on Facebook.

Even though most of my fellow friends and colleagues use Facebook for a more personal nature, they are a member of an educational PLN, even though they may not know it. They receive and share information that benefits others, one of the pillars of a PLN.

10 Ways I will Keep my New Year's Resolution

I have one professional New Year’s resolution (I wish I only had one personal resolution, it might guarantee a higher rate of success…) The goal I have set for myself for the remainder of the school year is to: Focus on the Positive! The following are 10 ways I will keep my resolution:

I     1.  I will recognize people for going above and beyond. Whether it is a hand-written note or quick text or email, I want to let people know how much I appreciate them.
      2.  I will treat others even better than I want to be treated.
      3.  I will embrace change and view it as an opportunity for professional growth.
      4.  I will accept a new challenge that will allow me to stretch as a professional.
      5.  I will believe in myself.
      6.  I will use social media to post articles on the profession of education that will benefit fellow colleagues either in the classroom or in leadership positions.
      7.  I will actively listen.
      8.  I will continue to read professional literature that will keep me current in educational trends.
      9.  I will keep an open mind.
     10. I will continue to raise the bar for myself, professionally and personally.

What are your professional New Year’s resolutions?

I'm not telling you that it's going to be easy; I'm telling you that it's going to be worth it.
